SPRINGFIELD — Delores Barbeau, MD, MPH, was named Physician of the Year by the Vermont Academy of Family Physicians. This distinguished award, presented by co-worker Barbara Dalton, MD, recognizes Dr. Barbeau’s longstanding reputation as “an outstanding physician and humanitarian,” acknowledged by fellow practitioners and staff at the Springfield Health Center.
Dr. Dalton, who is also a previous recipient of the award, said, “It is wonderful to work with her. She brings such energy and fun to our office, and has a never-ending dedication to make everyone she works with realize how important they are to her and to the total care of our patients. She is an inspiration to practitioners, staff and, most importantly, to our patients.”
Regarding Dr. Barbeau’s role as a physician, Dr. Dalton added, “Delores is an amazing physician. Her knowledge of medicine and her ability to put it into practice is obvious to those of us that work with her. She is able to form an extremely close relationship with her patients. She has a very down to earth approach of mutual respect and genuine desire to make each patient feel comfortable and cared for.”
Dr. Barbeau’s reputation and positive energy is felt at the community level in many ways. She participates in a chronic care initiative at Springfield Health Center, working to develop best practices for care management of patients living with chronic health conditions. She also works intimately with the nonprofit organization Neighborhood Connections, in Londonderry, Vermont, helping to meet the needs of people in that community. She also continues to have a close relationship with the brothers of the Weston Priory, allowing them to lend aid and support where needed in the community; and was prior Medical Director for the Rutland Free Clinic.
When asked about being named Physician of the Year, Dr. Barbeau said, “I was shocked at first to hear my name, and then extremely touched to see staff from Springfield Health Center waving to me and cheering from the back of the room. We have a great team here at the Springfield Health Center, and I could not do the work I do every day without the support and help from everyone here.”
Dr. Barbeau received her B.A. from the University of New York at Maryknoll, completed her medical degree and internship at Universidad de San Simon Cochabamba, Bolivia, and continued to work in Latin America for 25 years. She completed a residency in Surgery and Emergency Medicine at Elizabeth Seton Hospital, Cochabamba, Bolivia, and family practice residency at Wayne State University Family Practice Residency Program and University of Massachusetts, Fitchburg Family Practice Residency Program. She has also been an assistant professor to Family Practice and Internal Medicine Residents through Harvard Medical College, Boston, and University of Massachusetts Family Practice Residency, Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Dr. Barbeau currently practices at the Springfield Health Center at 100 River St., in Springfield and can be reached at (802) 886-8900.
