Published January 21, 2015 in the Rutland Herald McAllister’s 31 leads Springfield GIRLS BASKETBALL Springfield 55, L&G 47 TOWNSHEND — Chelsea McAllister poured in 31 points to lead the Cosmos to the win, but Leland & Gray coach Terry Merrow was hardly discouraged. “The first time we lost to them by 27,” Merrow said. “We had a great team effort. (Springfield coach) Joe Brown said to me that our kids played with a lot of heart. “If we get that same effort that we got tonight, we can compete with anybody on our schedule.” The 5-9 Rebels have six games remaining and Merrow figures they will have to win five of them to secure a home playoff game. “I don’t have to tell you what kind of a player MacAllister is,” Merrow said. “We played deny defense on her and she got her points.” Rachel Borgensen led the Rebels with 16 points and she also pulled in 14 rebounds. Haley Buffum had nine points and 14 boards fr the Rebels. L&G took the lead at one point in the second half. But the Rebels had to foul down the stretch and McAllister sank four of her five free throws late in the game to preserve the win.
