Springfield softball downs Rutland
By Staff Reports | May 21, 2015
Behind one of Jade Twombly’s strongest performances of the year, Springfield notched its second consecutive win on the road against a Division 1 opponent with a 3-1 victory at Rutland in a VPA softball matchup.
The junior allowed just one hit — a knock up the middle right back at her that deflected off of her glove in the second inning — walked just one and struck out 11.
The Cosmos jumped ahead in the second inning when Corrina Nichols led off with a walk. Twombly singled and advanced Nichols to third, and Maygan Daly dropped down a bunt and sacrificed the run home. In the fifth inning, Springfield extended the lead to two. Brooke Willey lined a two-out single into center and stole second before Lina Geyer singled her in the next at-bat.
Rutland scored its only run without the benefit of a hit in the bottom half of the fifth.
Springfield responded in the sixth in similar fashion to the way the Cosmos scored in the second. Chelsea McAllister stole second, Cassidy Otis moved her over to third with a sacrifice fly and Nichols dropped down a bunt, scoring McAllister from third.
The Cosmos (9-2) complete a three-game road stint Friday at Otter Valley.
