Springfield cruises past Lamoille in D-2 playoffs
Cosmos play Mt. Abraham in quarterfinals on Friday
By Chris Doherty | Jun 03, 2015
SPRINGFIELD — The No. 3 seed Springfield took care of No. 14 Lamoille by a 22-3 margin in the first round of the VPA Division 2 softball playoffs. The Cosmos needed very little offense as Lamoille’s pitching had difficulty finding the strike zone all game long.
After the Lady Lancers jumped ahead 1-0 after the top of the first, Springfield completely took over. Hits by Brooke Willey, Chelsea McAllister and Corrina Nichols led to two Cosmos runs to give them a 2-1 lead.
The second inning is where things got out of control. Springfield only needed one hit to score 15 runs in the bottom of the second. Lamoille pitching combined to hand out 13 walks and three hit batters during the inning. Combine that with three errors and a couple of wild pitches it got out of hand quickly.
“We’re not used to games like that,” Springfield head coach Andy Bladyka said. “You take what they give you.”
The game only lasted five innings and with the score the way it was Bladyka was happy to pull his ace Jade Twombly out of the game after three innings in the circle.
“Jade pitched three full games last week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday) so being able to take her out after three innings tonight was definitely a positive,” Bladyka said.
The No. 3 Cosmos now have two days to practice and prepare for their next opponent, which will be the No. 6 seed Mount Abraham which defeated the No. 11 seed Lake Region in the first round.
“We’re happy to move on to the next round and we’ve got two days to prepare which is good,” Bladyka said.
The Cosmos will again be at home, which is something Bladyka believes his team thrives on.
“It’s huge. The kids love it. It’s a chance for the seniors to extend their home careers after Senior Night,” he said. “It’s a comfort level, we get good crowds and these kids love playing on this field.”
The game between Springfield and Mt. Abraham will be at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Bill Robinson Field at Riverside Middle School.
