  1. Anyone care to join the team? Bueller? Bueller?

  2. Perfect example of how our school district just doesn't care about the students and only the bottom line.
I feel sad for the students of SHS. The graduating class this year is one of the most athletic groups there is. The Tubbs twins, Brook Willey, Lizzy Mackenzie, Kyle Weeks, Jon Hildreth, Josh Hoy and Jade Twombly are just a few of the names that could have gone somewhere with athletics.
Unfortunately with Zach Maclaughlin at the helm still, they never had a chance.

    1. Please provide examples of why this is the Superintendent's fault.

    2. 5:32, What? There is a great quote from a great Adam Sandler movie, "Billy Madison"
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

  3. Disagree with you 5:32PM. I don't see where it's the superintendent's fault. How about the demographics of our town the last 10-15 years? Kids today are not into sports like they were 20 - 25 years ago. They have more important things to do like work, so they can have a fancy car and all the latest electronic toys. Most don't want to make the commitment it takes to be a better than average athlete. Many parents don't have the time or interest in encouraging their kids to play sports or to even go to their games. The only thing you can fault the system with is that teachers are generally hired for coaching positions and sometimes they aren't the best choice. The athletes of today don't even begin to compare with athletes of just a generation ago. IMO it all goes back to the demographics of this dying town.

    1. As the parent of two Cosmos athletes, I agree somewhat. My kids worked so they could save money for a car to get to/from games/practice as my husband and I work and don't have the luxury of being in town to provide these rides. God forbid a student tries to work and play sports. Trying to get the coach and/or the employer to be accommodating with the schedules is most times a nightmare.

I modify my work hours as to attend almost every game for both children. My husband does not have that luxury. When there are two games on the same night, I go to the away game as there will be familiar faces at the home game.

Both parents having to work outside the home does reflect the economy though. I agree there.

Alot of this problem is the parents. It's the damn participation trophy crap. Middle school sports is where it needs to be treated as a sport not where everyone gets to play. If you have to many players on a team make cuts. It's going to happen freshman yr. Go watch a game at middle school level against a team like windsor. Windsor treats it like a sport even in parks/rec they only play the stronger players and teach them skills needed to play at an early age... good reason we aren't division 1 anymore at h.s level. To worried about everybody's feelings..... guess we got what a few wanted

  5. Agree with some of what you say 11:09AM.....I've heard that there are 19 girls on the 8th grade basketball team. 19! When you reach the 8th grade/end of junior high school the emphasis should be on preparing athletes for the next step...it's a whole 'nother ball game playing high school sports. Having that many players is doing a disservice to both the players who will be advancing and those who have no chance at all of making the next team....as well as it being a coach's nightmare trying to teach advanced offensive/defensive plays while more than half the team need to learn the basic fundamentals. Huge waste of time. Whatever happened to learning that not everyone is a winner, there have to be some losers......isn't it a crucial time for them to be learning some of life's unavoidable lessons? Division 1...hah! If we're not, we should be Division 3.

Exactly!!!!!!!!!! I agree 100% 7:11. 7th grade has 17 girls. I'm glad they have good turnout but it is a huge disservice to the girls/ boys that excel in a certain sport to have playing time severely redused because the handbook dictates everyone gets to play and no cuts. Hell even an a/b squad would help every player. Contact the a.d if you expect any type of change to occur.....yes I already have. I have two kids in school and sports. Springfield sports need a kick in the rear to try and get back to what it once was. Parents gotta help fix what they made for a current dilemma

Take school sports seriously: fine, it teaches valuable life lessons. Take winning school sports seriously: not so much. When you apply for a job, employers do want "good team players," but I've never heard them ask how your high school team did in the playoffs. Encourage everyone to participate in sports, then let them play. Anonymous 7:11, it's not a huge waste of time, and it will teach about winners and losers, and other lessons as well.
