SPRINGFIELD — The Cosmos clipped Mill River as the Minutemen’s record dipped to 1-2.
It was a nice comeback effort for 1-1 Springfield with Jon Hildreth getting the win with 5.2 innings of relief and John Stafford driving in the go-ahead run in the fifth. He had two hits and three RBI.
JJ Lecouffe polished it off with a save, getting the last out with a runner in scoring position.
“They want to win and they are working hard to do it,” said Cosmos coach Rich Saypack, whose team did not beat a Division II opponent last year. “I think they are playing hard and pressing to do well. They were very happy with this win.”
Matt Lachapelle had three this and two RBI and Kyle Weeks and Nick Bedi hit safetly twice for Springfield.
Zeb Reardon had a bid for a home run but Mill River’s Nick Hurka robbed him, snagging the ball before falling over the fence.
Tom Byrne took the loss for D-II Mill River, which got three hits from Mike Morgan and a big hit from Ethan Merriam during Mill River’s big rally in the second.
