In three of the six contested matches, the first set went to additional points. Sets are played until one opponent wins six games, but a player must win by two. If the score becomes tied at six, players enter a tie-breaker game, which also must be won by two. One of those was the grueling back-and-forth clash at No. 1 singles, where the Cosmos' Lexi Bellows would outlast BF's Reaghan Lapinski 7-5, 6-4. “They were evenly matched all day,” said Springfield coach Kim Lewis. Another was at no. 2 doubles, with Springfield's Jenn Anders and Kaila Johnston downing Kylie Comstock and Mikayla Sudarsky 7-5, 6-1. Then there was the match between Bellows Falls' Sarah Scarlett and Springfield's Katie Worth at No. 3 singles. The pair battled diligently with Scarlett eventually pulling out a 13-11 tie-breaker victory to win the set 7-6. “Both of them were exhausted — and they had to play another set,” Lewis said. Scarlett won the second set 6-0 for the Terriers' lone win on the court. The Cosmos' other singles victories came at No. 2 where Alex Fauver defeated Elle Guyon 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 4 where Alli Worster topped Hannah Harlow 6-1, 6-2. Springfield also won the No. 1 doubles match where Emilia Battista and Heather Morse beat Bradie Harris and Sophie Guerrina 6-0, 6-2. BF's Nina King won in a walk-over (forfeit) at No. 5 singles. With its second consecutive victory, Springfield improves to 2-3 on the season. “They did well,” Lewis said. “They've improved every match that we played. “My singles players, four of them played doubles last year and now they're stepping up and they're doing great.” The Cosmos return home for the first time since April 13, hosting Mt. St. Joseph (2-1) Tuesday and Rutland (3-3) Thursday. Bellows Falls slips to 0-6 and is back in action today at Woodstock (3-1).
