SPRINGFIELD — Hartford’s Gary Gervais deployed a gimmick defense and it worked well for five innings as the Hurricanes, who were beaten by Springfield 16-0 the first time around, found themselves in a 1-1 tie after five innings.
But the Cosmos beat the reconfigured outfield defense with three triples in the bottom of the sixth. Lena Guyer had the first triple and scored on Cassidy Otis’ sacrifice fly. Winning pitcher Jade Twombly and Hannah Crosby then had back-to-back RBI triples.
Twombly rang up 11 strikeouts in winning her three-hitter.
Brooke Hurd went the distance for Hartford.
“She pitched well,” Bladyka said.
The win lifts the Cosmos to 11-2 and they head to Mount Anthony on Monday.
Hartford is 7-7.
Bladyka must have been having flashbacks as Gervais’ Hurricanes upset the Cosmos in the playoffs a few years ago with a similar defense.
