SOFTBALL Springfield 9, MR 2
SPRINGFIELD — There was a scary moment when Rylee Nichols hit a laser back at Springfield pitcher Jade Twombley. It knocked her mask off and the ball flew into right field for a base hit.
“All of Springfield was holding it breath but she got up smiling,” Springfield coach Andy Bladyka said.
Unfazed, the Cosmos star pitcher finished the game with 10 strikeouts;.
Nichols hit the ball hard all day for the Minutemen and also had a double.
Mill River had the bases full with two outs and Nichols hit a screamer at Cosmos second baseman Lina Geyer. She gloved the hot smash on the hop and threw out Nichols.
“Lina was the defensive player of the game. She had six chances and handled them all,” Bladyka said.
Brooke Willey had two triples for the 14-3 Cosmos. Cassidy Otis had two hits with a double and four RBI and Geyer added two hits.
Next hurdle for the Cosmos: BFA-Fairfax.
