Residents checked out at hospital after ‘smoke’ condition
By SUSAN SMALLHEER
NORTH SPRINGFIELD — Two elderly residents and their caregiver were taken to Springfield Hospital on Thursday morning after a small fire broke out in their home on Northfield Drive.
Fire Chief Russell Thompson said the residents were taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution” after being exposed to smoke during the incident at 41 Northfield Drive.
Thompson said there was a very small fire at the home, which he said was contained in a bathroom.
Thompson declined to give the names of the residents and their caregiver, citing medical privacy concerns.
He said a state fire investigator will try to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
“It was a very small, confined fire. It was more of a smoke condition,” he said.
He said neighboring fire departments responded to the two-alarm fire, which was called because people had been in the building.
He said the three people were taken to Springfield Hospital by Charlestown, N.H., ambulance and Golden Cross Ambulance.
“We had a nice turnout and several communities responded,” the fire chief said.
He said Walpole, N.H., Ascutney and Bellows Falls departments all responded to the scene, while Charlestown covered the Springfield station.
