Published September 3, 2016 in the Rutland Herald Bellows Falls takes bite out of Springfield football By POODY WALSH WESTMINSTER — Bellows Falls, which made the Division II championship game a year ago and has 14 returning seniors, roared out to a 42-0 halftime lead, cleared the bench in the second half and came away with a 42-6 win over Springfield Friday night at Hadley Field in the season opener for both teams. “I’m excited about this team,” said Bellows Falls coach Bob Lockerby. “We’ve got a stable of backs, a solid tight end and an offensive line that is coming of age.” Meanwhile Springfield, with just one senior with playing experience, is still trying to gets its Division III program on solid footing, winning three games last year and knew in playing BF it would have some match up problems. “They might be the best team in Division II,”said Springfield coach Rich Saypack. “I said before the game that we would play hard for 32 minutes and I think we did that.” The Cosmos got a 30-yard scoring play in the second half as quarterback Kyle Monier hooked up with wide receiver Mason Olney for the score. Matt LaCapelle also had a gutsy game at running back for the Cosmos. However the night belong to the Terriers in front of a sizable crowd as Jahyde Bullard went on a 79-yard romp on the Terriers first possession to get BF off and running. It got to be 12-0 at the 5:53 mark of the first quarter when Lober went in from the five to culminate a 67-yard, seven-play drive that included a 20-yard roll out run from quarterback Caleb Lisai. Then it was Logan Cota on scores from the five and the 35 to make it 28-0, BF then closed out the scoring for the half as Lober scored on a 25-yard pass play and it was Lober again blasting in from the one. BF goes to Mt. Abraham next week while Springfield hosts Woodstock in its home opener. http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20160903/SPORTS02/160909852
