McAllister scores 19 in season opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Former Springfield High School basketball standout Chelsea McAllister came off the bench and scored a career-high 19 points for Springfield College in an 83-75 double-overtime victory against Western New England University Tuesday night.
McAllister, a sophomore guard, played 38 minutes and shared game-high honors with Pride senior reserve center Ava Adamopolous. McAllister hit 50-percent of her shots from the field (6-for-12), including five of her nine three-point attempts. Her previous high was 12 points.
She put up a dozen points in the third quarter on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range to keep Springfield in the game. With her team trailing by four with 47 seconds remaining in regulation, McAllister knocked down a trey to pull the Pride within 60-59, then added a layup with 29 seconds left for a 61-60 Springfield lead. WNE's Paige Young would make the second of two free throws with 12 seconds on the clock to send the game into OT.
Adamopolous scored 11 of her points in the extra sessions and Danielle Racette went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe in the second OT.
Springfield is ranked No. 3 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference behind Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Babson.
