Springfield wrestlers bring home the wins – medals as well as personal. The team brought home two JV State Champions, Mason Olney and Jayson Webster, from the competition in Barre last weekend. Brandon Bennett brought home second place; bronze medals were earned by Matt Prosser and Tim Bapp-Cederholm. In fifth place were Trent Lewis-Briere and Skyler Congdon; Mo Stettner claimed sixth place, and everyone cheered on teammates Gillian Guy and Skylar Wallace through some very tough matches. There were lots of close calls, nail-biting moments, and excellent moves executed by all Springfield grapplers; the coaches are very pleased with the accomplishments and progress made by each wrestler this season. The team’s sights are now set on Varsity States in Vergennes on Friday and Saturday, February 24 and 25. Running a K-12 team is not an inexpensive prospect; team co-manager Kelly Stettner calculates it costs roughly $10,000 a year, without paying coaches or any staff. The team raises money through fundraising events such as hosting tournaments and the annual Color Gauntlet 5K Fun Run. Stettner invites everyone to come out in support of these young grapplers and the sport they love by stopping in to watch some local wrestling on March 4. Riverside Middle School will be host to two back-to-back tournaments that day: the K-8 Schweitzer Memorial Tournament, which kicks off at 9 a.m. and in the afternoon, the Precision Valley Classic Girls State Championship is launched for female wrestlers in grades K-12. The PVC will also offer an open folk style division for adult women who wish to compete for the title of “Champion.” Donations to the team can be made out to Springfield VT Wrestling and mailed to Springfield Parks & Rec, 139 Main St, Springfield Vt. 05156. The Springfield Redemption Center, near Riverside Middle School, will also take donations of cans and bottles for the team. For any questions about the team, donations, or home tournaments, please contact team co-manager Kelly Stettner at k.stettner101@gmail.com or leave a message at 802-738-0456.
