The Steampunk Society of Vermont, a Springfield based nonprofit, is raising seed money for the 2017 Springfield Steampunk Festival, to be held on September 23rd and 24th at Hartness House Inn. After a successful cosplay ball in March, the March Hare’s Mad Cosplay Soiree, the society is moving on to coordinate Springfield’s first ever Fun Run and Tweed Ride on June 3rd at 9:00 am on Toonerville Trail in Springfield, VT. Proceeds will help support the Steampunk Festival, the nonprofit's primary fundraiser. Net proceeds of previous festivals have been donated to local groups in the Springfield community. Going forward the Steampunk Society of VT will use proceeds to create scholarships for Springfield students pursuing post-high school education in the STEAM subjects of science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
As one may know, a Fun Run is a short, non-competitive race, often done in costume. Despite being hosted by a steampunk group, costumes do not need to be steampunk themed. From superheros to cartoon characters, dress up however you like, just keep it family friendly! Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes for both adults and kids 17 and under. A Tweed Ride will follow the Fun Run.
A Tweed Ride also known as a Tweed Run, is a group bicycle ride where participants are dressed in traditional British cycling attire, often involving elaborate picnics pre or post ride. While bringing your own picnic spread is not a requirement for this event, dressing in traditional Victorian/Edwardian era outfits is a must. Any type of non-motorized bike or unicycle is welcome. Feel free to deck out your bike as well! Prizes will be awarded for best male and female outfits for kids and adults, and best decorated bike. The Tweed Ride will start at 10:30, with race registration for both events starting at 8 am.
As both events take place food vendors will be open at the trailhead to feed hungry race watchers. A 50/50 raffle will also be conducted.
Those registering on or before May 22nd will receive a commemorative race sticker (applies to paid packages only) Kids age 12 and under as of the day of the event run/ride for free.

The Steampunk Society of Vermont, a Springfield, Vermont-based nonprofit, is raising seed money for the 2017 Springfield Steampunk Festival, to be held on Sept. 23 and 24 at Hartness House Inn. After a successful cosplay ball in March, the March Hare’s Mad Cosplay Soiree, the society is moving on to coordinate Springfield’s first ever Fun Run and Tweed Ride on June 3 at 9 a.m. on Toonerville Trail in Springfield. Proceeds go toward supporting the Steampunk Festival, the nonprofit’s primary fundraiser. Steampunk takes much of its inspiration from writers of the Victorian age, including Jules Verne and H.G. Wells and the fictional worlds they created. “The fantasy worlds created by these authors combined with our present day knowledge of science and technology drives Steampunk imagination. A futuristic Victorian Age where technology is powered by steam or gears (similar to a watch that runs on gears) rather than electricity,” organizers explain on the Steampunk Festival’s website. Each year, proceeds from the festival go toward a different area organization. In its first year, the organizing team donated net proceeds of about $1,000 to the Springfield Community Center. Last year, proceeds went toward the Springfield Humane Society. Going forward, the Steampunk Society of Vermont will use proceeds to create scholarships for Springfield students pursuing post-high school education in the STEAM subjects of science, technology, engineering, art, and math, according to a press release from the organization.
