2nd Annual Gurney Field Day

The 2nd Annual Donald I. Gurney Sr. Field Day will be held on Saturday, May 13 starting at 9 a.m. The Springfield Booster Club, Springfield Parks & Recreation Department and the Springfield School District are collaborating to make this even bigger and better than last year.

Remembering a great man, celebrating our youth, recognizing our athletes and some good old fashion family fun – that is what the Donald I Gurney Sr Field Day – A Celebration of Springfield Athletics is all about. Be a part of the exciting, second annual, event on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The Springfield Booster Club, Springfield Parks and Rec and Springfield School District have joined forces in a collaborative effort to make this an annual event for our community and its athletes.

Long time Springfield resident, o I Gurney Sr. passed away on October 17, 2015. Mr. Gurney was an incredible man that did what he could to help out his town with the goal of making Springfield a great place to live. He was the founder of many organizations including the Springfield Booster Club. It is in his honor that this event has been created and properly named.

The day begins with a parade showcasing the athletes, grades K-12, through our Springfield Streets and ends at Riverside Middle School. The parade, led by the Boy Scout and Cub Scout Color Guard, will consist of vehicles from Gurney Brother’s Construction – including Mr. Gurney’s Calliope along with trucks and trailers from other local businesses and coaches.

Upon culmination of the parade there will be Opening Ceremony on Robinson Field at Riverside Middle School. The ceremony boasts live music, the National Anthem, a guest speaker and the ceremonial first pitch to set the stage for the day, plus a few other surprises.

Games begin immediately following the Opening Ceremony – over the course of the day all 5 fields will be in use for either scrimmages or official games along with exhibitions planned by our off season teams. The fields and park will be busy that day with family activities, food and Cosmos merchandise, live music and so much more.

 The culmination of the day begins with a game under the lights at Robinson Field and then segwaying into the Closing Ceremony set for 8:00 p.m. The Closing Ceremony will be in honor of Mr. Gurney, our community and all the children, families and athletes that make it great. The current Booster Club president, Rachel Hunter stated, “We believe Mr. Gurney continually supported and contributed to Springfield because he wanted to see the town grow and evolve – we are taking that same approach with this event – we want to recognize the athletes and also allow the event to grow and evolve over time in his memory.”

Gurney Sr. Field Day will be held on Saturday, May 13 starting at 9 a.m. The Springfield Booster Club, Springfield Parks & Recreation Department and the Springfield School District are collaborating to make this even bigger and better than last year. Now dubbed Gurney Field Day, this day was created in honor of Donald I. Gurney Sr. who passed away on Oct. 17, 2015. Gurney was an incredible man who did everything he could to help out his town with the goal of making Springfield a great place to live. Included in his many accomplishments was being a founding member of the Springfield Booster Club. The festivities will begin with a parade at 9 a.m., beginning at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Rt. 106 that will deliver more than 300 Springfield athletes, grades K-12, to Robinson Field at Riverside Middle School. The parade, led by the Boy Scout and Cub Scout Color Guard, will consist of vehicles from Gurney Brother’s Construction — including Gurney’s beloved Calliope along with trucks and trailers from other local businesses and coaches. Upon culmination of the parade there will be opening ceremony on Robinson Field that will begin at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony boasts Kristi Morris as this year’s guest speaker, live music, the National Anthem, along with a ceremonial first pitch and a few other surprises. Games will begin immediately following the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. — five fields will be in use with 18 scheduled games, including 11 official season games. The fields and park will be busy day with family activities such as: a dunk tank, bounce house, cornhole games, face painting, soccer-tennis, 3V3 pickup games on the basketball court, family games and so much more. There will also be two concession stands open featuring natural casing hot dogs and Winter View Farm grass fed beef hamburgers along with a tent for family seating and Cosmos merchandise. The day wraps up as the Cosmos Varsity Softball team takes on the Green Mountain Chieftains under the lights at Robinson Field. But wait, there’s more, as the final game closes at approximately 9 p.m., fireworks will soar into the night sky to celebrate the day, the athletes, the families and town of Springfield. “We believe Mr. Gurney continually supported and contributed to Springfield because he wanted to see the town grow and evolve — we are taking that same approach with this event — we want to recognize the athletes and also allow the event to grow and evolve over time in his memory,” said the current booster club president, Rachel Hunter.
