Springfield Alumni Day Parade, 2017 BY KAREN ENGDAHL, The ShopperJune 22, 2017 Alumni DaySPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Energized by the theme of “Sports,” SHS anniversary classes presented an upbeat tribute to their athletes, teams, and coaches in the 2017 Alumni Day Parade. Hundreds of SHS Alumni as well as visiting musicians, clowns, dignitaries, and well-wishers participated in the event that served as centerpiece to a weekend-long slate of events celebrating Springfield High School graduates. Special recognition was given to the Oldest Alumna, Marion Harlow; Honored Guest, former vocal music teacher Tom Battista; SHS 2017 Valedictorian Emily Antonivich and Salutatorian Alex Warner; Hall of Fame inductees Roxanne Schroeder-Arce and Joseph J. Mangano; and others. An enthusiastic crowd cheered those receiving special recognition, as well as traditional favorites such as the Shriner Clown Unit, the Gurney Brothers Calliope, area bands, and the shining string of classic cars. Children lined the parade route, eager for their share of the candy generously doled out by members of the various classes and organizations. Members of the Alumni Association also scooted through the crowd on their ATVs, selling popcorn and water to hungry and thirsty patrons. The parade, the centerpiece of the SHSAA (Springfield High School Alumni Association) yearly program, occurs annually on Fathers’ Day weekend. Other events hosted by the SHSAA include the Alumni Banquet and Golf Tournament (also on Alumni Weekend) and the Beyond the Unicorn Craft Fair held in December. Proceeds from these events help fund the scholarships the group awards each year. To enlarge images and see captions, click once on each photo.
