Springfield softball in command Rutland Herald | June 01, 2017 By POODY WALSH CORRESPONDENT SPRINGFIELD – With one out in the bottom of the fifth thunder was heard at Bill Robinson Field and the Division II softball playdown round game with Springfield hosting Mill River on Wednesday was halted, with the Cosmos leading 7-2. After a delay of 80 minutes as thunder and lightning continued, followed by rain showers the game was suspended. Plans are for Mill River to make a return trip to Springfield on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to finish the contest. There was some concern about a bus being available to transport the players. Before the team headed back to Mill River, Minuteman coach Mary Colvin was trying to arrange for private transportation. Springfield, the eighth seed at 8-8, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, then put up a big six spot in the fourth. The ninth-seeded, 9-7 Minutemen came back with two in the top of the fifth. Then with one on and one out in the bottom of the inning with Springfield runners on second and third and Cassidy Otis at the plate the game was halted. The winner of the Thursday game gets to take on top- seeded, 11- 5 Mount Abraham on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Springfield pitcherHannah Crosby had 10 strikeouts for the Cosmos, but escaped some jams as Mill River left seven runners on over the first five innings. Springfield’s run in the third was unearned as an error preceded Otis’ RBI single. In the fourth the inning started with singles by Maddie Stagner, Laura Wentworth and Jenna Veysey, Stagner scoring on Veysey’s hit. After a walk to Ashley Chamberlin, Lina Guyer had a two-run single. Before the inning was over Otis would drive in another run with a sacrifice fly and Julianna Albero-Livings would single in the final run of the frame. The two Mill River runs in the fifth came on a McKenna Ludden RBI single and an infield out off the bat of Melissa Fay. The Minutemen had a shot at a substantial inning in the second when they had runners on first and second with one out. However, Crosby had two strikeouts to get out of the inning.
