SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Fifth graders at the Union Street School in Springfield, Vermont have helped to design posters for the Springfield Vermont Steampunk Festival. The 2017 festival is to be held Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 at the Hartness House Inn in Springfield, and will have a Steampunk-Circus-Spectacular theme. The 80-plus fifth graders designed posters to promote the children’s program at this year’s festival, which will feature traditional carnival games, kids' art and craft classes, children’s rounds of tea dueling, and opportunities for children to walk in the fashion show. The winning poster, created by Zada Grant, was chosen by the Steampunk Society of Vermont, the nonprofit volunteer-run group hosting the festival. Zada did an excellent job of representing many elements of the steampunk festival in her poster design. The 2017 Springfield Steampunk Festival will feature Karnevil’s 10 in 1 sideshow, bull whip stunt shows, flame eaters, sword swallowers, jugglers, an Houdini escape show, acrobatics, stilt walkers and performers from New England Center for Circus Arts. Steampunk, being a melding of the steam-powered era and the future is perfectly paired with a venue like the Hartness House, a Victorian Mansion and Inn. In addition to circus-themed events and activities, the festival will also feature underground tunnel and telescope tours, multiple musical acts, a fashion show, workshops and presentations, a photo booth, vendors of various steampunk and unique wares, food vendors, teapot races, tea dueling, absinthe workshop and tasting, parlour games, and more. Children 11 and under get in for free and the overall ticket prices have been reduced this year for teens and adults. Those who are willing to volunteer for a 4-hour shift helping at the festival, no experience required, will earn free weekend passes.
