SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Hundreds of holiday shoppers cheerfully jostled shoulder-to-shoulder through the maze of treasure-laden booths at the Beyond the Unicorn Christmas Craft Fair hosted by the SHS Alumni Association at Riverside Middle School on Saturday, Dec. 2. Now in its 39th year and featuring 98 vendors, the fair once again served as Springfield’s version of a super mall. Artists, crafters, and chefs offered a spectacular array of wares ranging from fresh baked goods to woodworking to doggie treats. unicorn Jen Mortensen of Buddy Bandannas. Photo by Karen Engdahl. With her sewing machine humming, Jen Mortensen of Buddy Bandanas looked up frequently to greet those who eagerly browsed through her bandanas for dogs. “Lots of people want gifts for pets!” she smiled. “We have a huge selection of dog bandanas in all kinds of colors and prints!” Also doing a brisk business nearby were people selling local products such as honey, goat milk soap, and fresh balsam wreaths. Local authors offered books including “19th Century Springfield,” “A Touch of Springfield,” plus thriller mysteries and children’s books. Springfield High School students offered face painting and gift-wrapping. Clown Purple, easily spotted in the crowd, pleased youngsters with a variety of animals and festive shapes fashioned with balloons. “This one looks like a giraffe!” squealed five-year-old MacKenzie Fallon, who was visiting the fair with her grandparents. unicorn Waiting in the lunch line. Neighbors chatted with neighbors, or with new acquaintances, as they waited in line for the comfort food offered by alumni chefs – a steaming bowl of chili was a popular lunch option. Other food vendors offered flatbreads, soups, sausage, and sweets for take out. The Beyond the Unicorn Fair is Springfield High School Alumni Association’s biggest fundraiser of the year and provides the juried vendors, most of whom are local, with a high-visibility venue. Proceeds from the event go to support alumni scholarships and activities.
