2017-11-15 / Springfield YMCA names Sean Fortier as new program director SPRINGFIELD — After a five-month vacancy in its program director position, the Meeting Waters YMCA has announced that Sean Fortier of Asheville, North Carolina and formerly of Alstead and Keene, New Hampshire, has been selected to fill that position. A committee of YMCA staff and board members conducted the national search and vetting process that resulted in Sean’s selection. According to the Meeting Waters Y board chair, Dr. John Hagen, the committee reviewed all applicants’ resumes and then conducted interviews with those candidates most qualified for the position. “I am very pleased with the results of the search. Sean brings with him a wealth of youth programming experience and he is eminently qualified for the responsibility of overseeing our current Y-ASPIRE and camp programs, and developing new YMCA programs that will serve our communities,” Hagen said. “The board and I are very excited about the balance of organizational experience and fresh ideas that Sean will bring to the Meeting Waters YMCA.” Fortier attended Meeting Waters YMCA’s Y Day Camp throughout his childhood. At age 14, he became an LIT (Leader-in-Training). He then spent seven summers on the camp staff, serving as Assistant Camp Director the final two years. He also worked at several sites of the Y’s afterschool program, Y-ASPIRE, in high school and college, and was also a participant in the Y’s Youth & Government Program at Fall Mountain Regional High School, a program he would like to revive. After graduating from Keene State College in 2015, he moved to Asheville to work at a SOAR, Inc.’s summer camp for teens with ADHD and other learning disabilities. He was hired by the Academy at SOAR, the adventure-based boarding school, to lead their learning expeditions throughout the school year. As an avid outdoorsman and experienced youth development professional, he was hired to lead three-week adventure-based expeditions tied to educational outcome objectives. He spent this past summer leading SOAR Academy’s “Spanish Immersion” program — nine weeks in Peru and Ecuador. “As fundamental principles of the Y, the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, along with its mission of ‘building strong communities by inspiring all to develop healthy spirit, mind and body’ have been central aspects of my life since I was five years old,” Fortier said. “My experiences both attending and working at the Y have been the most formative of my life, and it is with that mentality that I approach this job … I would like to continue to foster and develop leaders through our current programs, and use my experiences from SOAR to expand upon them and envision new opportunities.” “Sean brings innovative ideas and a new perspective, while maintaining the culture and history so important to a YMCA of nearly 123 years. He brings a youthful perspective and challenges me to think outside the box,” said Executive Director Susan Fortier. “I am looking forward to working with him and to exploring new possibilities for Meeting Waters YMCA.” Meeting Waters YMCA is a charitable, nonprofit social service organization developed in 1895 by more than 100 volunteers. Its services and programs positively impact youth, adults, families and communities in the Springfield, Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, and Fall Mountain regions.
