The workshop will focus on the magnificent New England countryside in winter. Light, shadow, value and composition will be emphasized. The instructor will begin with a demonstration, explaining each step of the process. Participants will then paint, with the instructor providing hands-on assistance. A critique will be given at the end of the class. A full-time artist and instructor, Perkinsville resident O’Brien has been painting in watercolors for 40 years. He has received many awards, most recently the 2013 Best-in-Show at the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition in Waitsfield and the Academic Artists Award at the 63rd Academic Artists Association National Exhibition in Vernon, Connecticut. He is represented by Powers Gallery in Acton, Mass., The Gallery at the VAULT in Springfield, Vermont Fine Art in Stowe, and Hunter Gallery of Fine Art in Grafton. Examples of his work can be seen on his website, www.robertjobrien.com In describing his art, O’Brien says "One of my main objectives in watercolor painting is to create light through the use of shadow. In painting ordinary images, I find a fascinating interplay between the two. The transparency of the medium helps in bringing shadows alive while allowing the light to glow." Now beginning its 30th year, Main Street Arts is a nonprofit community arts center dedicated to serving the creative needs of the greater community by encouraging creative exploration and expression through a wide range of experiences. Further information is available at www.MainStreetArts.org or on Facebook. Pre-registration for the workshop is required, at which time a materials list will be provided. Reference photos will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own. The fee is $58 for MSA members and $71 for non-members. Registration is available by calling MSA at (802) 869-2960 or emailing info@mainstreetarts.org.
