Pigs are actually considered the fifth-most intelligent animal in the world — even more intelligent than dogs — and are capable of playing video games with more focus and success than chimps! Pigs can respond to their own given name within 7 days of birth. Sadly, millions of pigs live abysmal lives on factory farms.

Vermont Packinghouse donates more than $5,000 to Springfield schools | December 21, 2017 Mary Krueger of Vermont Packinghouse (left) hands a $1,400 check to the Elm Hill School Principal Christine Pereira. SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Vermont Packinghouse is donating $5,200 to support local Springfield schools. As part of their employee holiday celebration, each employee was given the opportunity to allocate $100 to a Springfield school project of their choice. “This is a way for Vermont Packinghouse to recognize and support the Springfield community that we are part of,” said Arion Thiboumery, Managing Partner at Vermont Packinghouse. “We are very fortunate that our business has grown tremendously over the last couple of years. Many of our staff grew up here, live here and have children in these schools. As a business focused on sustainability and the future, supporting the children of our community is central to building a sustainable future.” The most votes went to Elm Hill Primary School, and they will receive $1,400 toward technology needs at the school. “It’s heartwarming that local businesses are so supportive of our schools,” said Christine Pereira, Elm Hill School principal. “This generous donation from Vermont Packinghouse will help us add new technology equipment for our art, music and library programming and instruction. I look forward to the positive impact that these changes will have on our school community and our students!” Union Street School will receive $1,200 to support interactive learning gardens for the students. “We are thrilled to partner with Vermont Packinghouse in the effort to raise healthy, well-educated students, who understand the importance of locally raised and sourced foods,” said Union Street Principal Nancy Wiese. “Donations like this are key to making our new edible learning garden possible. We cannot thank them enough for their support in this endeavor!” In 2016, Springfield voters approved purchase of a dilapidated building in front of the Union Street school. That building has since been since torn down, opening up an area out front to build the interactive learning gardens. Riverside Middle School will receive $1,200 to support its farm to school and culinary programs and the high school will get $500 for its Innovations Labs program to be launched next year. Six hundred dollars will also go to All-4-One before/after school program and $300 will support the Springfield Booster Club. Vermont Packinghouse regularly hosts educational tours for schools and colleges. It began operations in July of 2014, starting out with 10 full time employees. Today they employ close to 60 people and processed over 3 million pounds of locally and sustainably raised beef, pork and lamb for the region this year.
