2018-01-10 / Springfield All welcome to MLK ‘Speak Out for Justice!’ event SPRINGFIELD — Riverside Middle School teacher Becca Polk and Springfield High School students Harry Valentin and Alex Beebe will host a “Speak Out for Justice!” event, along with the community, to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The family-friendly event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Springfield Community Center. It is supported by the Springfield Teachers Association. “Join us in harmony. Speak out your mind, your heart, and your soul. At the open mic, you are free to express yourself in a poem, a song, spoken word or other performance,” organizers wrote in a press release. There will also be a crafts table available for anyone to take part. This event is family friendly and open to everyone, with bread and soup provided. “In a time where this country is becoming more and more divide, we as young people feel Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is important because he teaches us the importance of equality and how we should treat each other. We hope that this event will encourage the community to start having more conversations and be more accepting of others,” they wrote. For more information, contact rpolk@ssdvt.org.
