Last thursday, during that warm weather rain, we were coming north on 91,dense fog and dark, these 4 long log trucks from Quebec were in a pack doing 70 and passing all veichles. Nuts.
ReplyDeleteI was the car driving right behind the plow (not other cars around) when the log truck came barreling toward both of us at a high speed especially considering the weather and road conditions and I watched the entire accident happen and somehow managed to get out unscathed on the other side. The log truck didn't even slow down! It could be that his brakes were locked on the ice/snow on the highway, but it was unbelievable to watch and I feel incredible lucky to be alive.
ReplyDeleteIf I were you….I'd go buy a lottery ticket! Talk about lucky.
DeleteYou are absolutely right.
DeleteRemember when I was driving from the Plaza to north springfield doing 40 and in front of the black rock a semitruck from Quebec Canada passed me on the RIGHT. It was going a least 60!
ReplyDeleteThe average car's traction on the road starts with the footprint of four tires, each of which has about as much surface on the pavement as a large palm print. How much surface area contact is there for an 18-wheeler with a 32-ton load? Scary to think of.
ReplyDeleteWell, you're close to right. Traction is as much about weight as tire footprint. More weight on the same footprint improves traction. If you've ever driven a light car with wide tires in the rain, you find this out pretty quick! The real danger lies in the forces that act on a vehicle in turns or lane changes. Center of gravity, and the dynamics of shifting loads under braking and turns are what causes most accidents. Slowing down, and allowing grater distances for lane changes is the solution.
DeletePlease don't confuse Chuck with actual facts. He and the rest of his socialist buds hate to be clouded with actual reality. They might have have less to protest about this weekend...
DeleteIs there more info on this, was anyone hurt, where are the drivers from?
ReplyDeleteYes, the log truck was going north. It was from Quebec. Canadian driver was speeding down the long hill with a very heavy load. Everyday there are a bunch of them hauling logs to, I guess, Canada. Thought they had lots of their own trees up there.
