Report backs new Vermont mega-prison by WPTZ / WNNE US -0:34 MONTPELIER, Vt. — A new report drafted for the Vermont Legislature suggests replacing several aging correctional facilities with one mega-prison, designed for specific inmate groups, over the next decade. The concept, proposed by the Agency of Human Services, suggests taxpayers would save money and offenders would be better served with a new 925-bed prison. Advertisement Separate pods would be designed for specific inmate groups, and the prison could be constructed in phases over a period of years. State Rep. Alice Emmons, of Springfield, chairwoman of the House Committee on Corrections, promised her panel would conduct a methodical review of the agency's plan that likely will consume the rest of the 2018 session. The report suggests that the centralized prison would replace aging facilities in South Burlington, Essex and St. Albans, and allow Vermont to end its practice of sending roughly 250 inmates to prisons in other states.
Great idea, JUST DON'T BUILD IT IN SPRINGFIELD, ALICE!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteComments from the article below, are they saying put all these things together? People and kids who need help in their lives, housing them on the same property... great great idea.... categorizing Vermonters as the same as prisoners, and yes some are... but there is a reason they are prisoners and they should be treated that way... not housed near kids or families needed assistance.
ReplyDelete"I think what we're looking at long-term is something that meets the needs of Vermonters-- both the inmates, the public, mental health patients, kids at risk, transitional housing," said Flory, R-Rutland County.
Ditto not in my town...
Lets be fair. No MEGA prison in one town. EACH town of Springfield size or larger should have their OWN prison. Spread the jobs and opportunities.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, if it can be screwed up, you can count on a two-bit political hack like Alice Emmons to do so royally.
ReplyDeleteIn the 35 years Emmonds has been in the House can someone point out how Springfield has benefited from her service? What about any professional accomplishments? Has she even worked to earn a livelihood and pay a mortgage? Just wondering.........
ReplyDelete4:19: You can thank the VSEA (Vermont State Employees' Association)They don't need to do good at their jobs!
