Springfield’s Cadence Wheeler was a big winner in the jumps. Wheeler placed first in the boys long jump with a mark of 19-07.50 and first in the triple jump by landing a jump of 40-05.50.

D2 H.S. Indoor Track State Championships By Jack Fitzsimmons | Posted: Fri 11:47 PM, Feb 09, 2018 BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The Milton boys track team claimed its first ever D-II Indoor Track state championship while the Rice girls won their fifth straight Friday night at UVM. On the boys side, Springfield's Cadence Wheeler had a clean sweep of the distance jumping events as he claimed the long jump and the triple jump. A new state record set in the shot put: Reno Tuttle of Bellows Falls beat the previous mark by nearly a foot and a half. To the track we go, a great showing by Abayomi Lowe of Hartford, who claimed wins in the 55 meters, the 300, and anchored the 4 by 400 relay win. But it would be Rice and Milton who would battle it out for the team crown. The Knights got a second place finish in the high jump and first place in the 55 hurdles from Davis Lavoie. Their 4x200 team also took the win. But it wasn't enough to edge the Yellow Jackets. Mike Ferro and Levi Yoder finished second and third in the 1500, Carson Bianchi and Zach Popke were 1-2 in the 600, and Popke and Yoder took first and second in the 1000. Milton beats Rice by 13 points to claim their first ever indoor title. "I'm feeling really good, we got in a lot of good early miles," said Popke. "We got a new Milton coach, he's super amazing, he's getting us really good training and turning our Milton program into a championship team." Over on the girls side, we start with the weight throw. Rebecca Chicoine of Rice with a new state record, her toss the best by more than two feet. In track and field, there are two events where you try to jump over a bar, and Milton's Camille Hanna was victorious in both. The Yellow Jacket took both the high jump and pole vault on tiebreakers. Onto the track, an impressive performance for Lamoille's Meganne Gilmore who swept the one-thousand and 15-hundred meter races. Lydia Pitts of Mt. Abe took the 55 meter hurdles along with wins in both the long jump and triple jump. Izzy Geising of Oxbow claiming the win in the 600 meters, breaking her own state record by nearly two full seconds. But it was the second place finisher in that race that won the day. Rice's Sonia John with a new state record in the 55 meter dash. She also claimed the 300 and anchored the 4x400 relay team that finished second. The Rice girls claiming a 5th straight D2 state title. "I mean it's really humbling to come such a long way, personally and with my team as a whole," said John. "It's just really nice to end my season in this manner." The D-I Championships are Saturday, also at UVM.
