Cosmos softball dominant in round one win over Woodstock Kameron Towle Sports Crosby Springfield's Hannah Crosby pitched a complete-game one-hitter while striking out nine in just five innings of work in Tuesday's first round win. Kameron Towle SPRINGFIELD- The No. 5-seeded Springfield Cosmos softball team hosted No. 12 Woodstock on Tuesday evening, and after exploding for 7 runs in the bottom of the first, they would only continue to roll, winning 19-0 in just 4 ½ innings. After a 1,2,3 top half of the first, the Cosmos batted around the order in the bottom-half. Hannah Crosby got things started with an RBI-double that scored Ashley Chamberlain. Julianna Albero-Levings then plated Crosby with an RBI single to left. Mykahla Jasinski hit an RBI-double to center that scored Albero-Levings. Laura Wentworth then slapped an RBI-triple to center and later scores on a passed-ball. After popping out to start the game, lead-off hitter Molly Leonard came up again and this time delivered. She knocked two in with a double to the right-center gap to give Springfield a 7-0 advantage after one. Springfield’s Crosby struck out two in part of another 1,2,3 inning in the second. The Cosmos plated two more in the second frame as Woodstock made errors in the field and started to throw the ball around. Cosmos senior, Gillian Guy, picked up an RBI in the inning. After yet another 1,2,3 top-half, including two punch-outs by Crosby, Springfield tacked on two more in the bottom of the third. After a Chamberlain walk, Crosby continued to help her own cause, as she hit a liner over the head of the Woodstock centerfielder, resulting in a 2-run inside-the-park homerun, giving Springfield an 11-0 lead after three innings of play. Woodstock managed their first baserunners in the top of the fourth. But, with two on and two out, the Cosmos were able to get out of the inning unscathed on a groundball force-out at second base. In the bottom-half of the fourth, the Cosmos bats exploded. After a fly-out to start the inning, two walks and a single from Jenna Veysey, who reached base four times in the nine-spot, loaded the bases. Lizzy Chambers then came off the bench and had a big 3-RBI double to centerfield to make the score 14-0. Crosby remained hot, as she slapped a triple to left, scoring Chambers. Crosby and Albero-Levings each scored on passed-balls. Then, to get Springfield’s 18th and 19th runs, Madee Stagner and Guy each knocked in runs on groundballs. Crosby struck out nine in her complete-game, one-hitter for the Cosmos, with her only hit allowed coming from a bunt and a close play at first. She also had the one walk to allow just two baserunners all afternoon. On the big 19-0 win in the first round Tuesday, Cosmos head coach, Andy Bladyka, said, “We had a solid team-effort today. We hit, pitched, fielded, and ran the bases well. It’s the hitting by the entire lineup today and for the last five games that we really like. There’s no easy-outs in our lineup, and I haven’t said that in a long time. The opposition gets tougher now, but I like our chances at Enosburg Friday.” Springfield softball (12-5) will head to No. 4 Enosburg Falls (13-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. for what should be a high-powered matchup. Enosburg defeated Rice 24-9 in their first round game on Tuesday.
