Green Mountain softball leaves Springfield with win Kameron Towle Sports Knockenhauer Green Mountain's Erika Knockenhauer delivering a pitch on Saturday night. Kameron Towle SPRINGFIELD- Green Mountain’s softball team was able to grab a road victory over the Cosmos on Saturday night, winning 9-2 behind a strong offensive start and a complete-game from pitcher Erika Knockenhauer. Green Mountain started the game out with back-to-back doubles in the top of the first on their way to scoring three runs to jump out to a quick lead over the Cosmos. In the top of the second, they added two more with RBI-singles from Maddie Wilson and Lexi White to get out to a 5-0 advantage. Green Mountain head coach Terry Farrell, on his team’s early lead, said, “We came ready to play… we hit the ball right away. That’s the toughest pitcher [Cosmos’ Hannah Crosby] we’re going to see all year until the playoffs probably, and we were ready. I was really happy with the way we hit the ball.” The Chieftains picked up a run in the fourth and another in the sixth before Springfield got on the board in the bottom-half of the sixth. Laura Wentworth knocked in Crosby with an RBI infield-single after Crosby got on with a double, and then the Cosmos plated another on an illegal pitch from Knockenhauer. After six innings of play, Green Mountain led, 7-2. In the top of the seventh, after the Chiefs scored on an overthrow, Wilson had a solo inside-the-park homer to deep centerfield to bring the lead up to 9-2. On the blast to center, Farrell said, “She’s got four or five home runs this year… that ball went to the fence… and this is a big field.” In the bottom of the seventh, Springfield managed just a single. On the game Saturday night, Cosmos’ head coach, Andy Bladyka, said, “Green Mountain was the better team tonight… they came to play and we had a bit of a slow start. They hit the ball hard in the first inning. Erika pitched well for them. We had won five in a row and tonight we were off our game.” For Green Mountain, Knockenhauer struckout 12 batters in her complete-game. “Erika pitched a real good game. That changeup of hers is good,” said Farrell post-game. Green Mountain improves to 10-1 and hosts Arlington on Monday. As for Springfield, they fall to 7-4 and have a big matchup on Monday evening. Coach Bladyka: “We got a big one Monday at Fair Haven… they’re the number one team in our division and they beat us opening day 8-5. This game is basically for the Marble Valley League Division 2 Title… If we beat them, we’re tied with them, and if they beat us… they’ve got it… because nobody else is close… it’s just them and us. So, another challenging game Monday… and these are the games that’ll help you get ready for the tournament.”
