Youth Solidarity Rally Parades Into Newport Gordon Alexander May 14, 2018 Updated 14 hrs ago 0 North Country Union High School hosted The Queer and Allied Youth Summit event this weekend that saw some 170 teens march from the school to downtown Newport’s Pomerleau Park for a gathering at the gazebo to voice their concerns. The event was themed “BE-yond The Rainbow” and partly focused on the the idea of “in our perfect world” for the teens. The day was warm and sunny as was the students’ attitudes as the voiced their concerns and wishes and waved their placards. Some of the viewers and shoppers in downtown gave approving honks and thumbs up to the parade of youths. The group of young people hailed from all over Vermont and even Quebec. Some participants spoke briefly, stressing their individual concerns seeking acceptance and power to celebrate their authentic selves and their dreams for the future. “Every Kid Deserves a Loving Supportive Family,” “I want a world where I can just be myself and not be afraid,” “I am sick off always caring about who I was,” “I just want to be myself,” “I don’t want children,” “I am sick of being afraid of who I am” were some of the slogans spoken and emblazoned on the signs the youth carried. Students travel from across the state, often with advisors of their gender and sexuality alliances (GSAs), to attend the free event each year. To protect youth safety, the Summit is a registration-based event and is not open to the public.
