Cosmos field hockey fights late, falls 3-2 Kameron Towle SPRINGFIELD- The Cosmos field hockey team opened up their season at home against Brattleboro on Friday evening, losing a close, hard-fought game, 3-2 at Porter Field. “Every time we face Brattleboro, we always feel like it’s going to be a close matched game, and this was no different,” said co-head coach Kelly DeAngelis. Senior Paige Congdon got the Cosmos on the board after an early Brattleboro goal to knot the game at one, and then Springfield fell behind, allowing two goals and going in a 3-1 hole. But, the Cosmos were determined to not just roll over. Chloe Jerman-Brown scored at the 4:40 mark in the second half to bring the Cosmos to within a goal. After that goal, Springfield came out with more energy than they had all first half, putting the pressure on the Colonels with constant attack. Co-coach DeAngelis credited Joe Cerniglia for her team’s will to keep fighting late in the second half. Cerniglia, who comepetes in triathlons, is a community member who is volunteering his time to talk to multiple Springfield sports programs about the mental aspect of playing sports. advertisement “He’s been teaching our kids about digging deep and finding that next gear when you’re exhausted out on the field, and we are so appreciative of that work,” said DeAngelis. “I think that’s how they were able to keep rising above and keep fighting, even till the last minute. We expect that from them and now it’s coming together.” The push for the Cosmos was not enough, however, as they fell short due to a talented Brattleboro team that held off the late Comso-attack. “It’s our first time out and we’re still a young team… so all in all… I feel good about the game,” said DeAngelis. “There’s obviously stuff we need to work on but it was hard fought, and we had a lot of possessions where we had the momentum. “ Co-head coach Lyndsie Perkins was proud of her team’s effort Friday, saying, “There’s been a lot of improvement from where we ended last season to where we’re starting now… which is really positive. We’re proud of them and I think we have some good momentum going forward.”
