girls soccer Opportunistic Cosmos trim BF By Poody Walsh Correspondent Sep 17, 2018 0 Save SPRINGFIELD — Soccer, like all sports, is about opportunities and what you do with them. On Monday at Gurney Field in Springfield, the Cosmos cashed in on their chances and Bellows Falls cashed out as Springfield broke open a close game with three second-half goals along the way to a 4-0 Marble Valley League victory. Junior Jenna Veysey was the most opportunistic of the Cosmos, scoring three of her team’s goals. “She’s nice to have around,” said her coach Kevin Hoisington. While the final score indicates a Springfield rout, it was anything but as Bellows Falls, after giving up a very early goal, kept the score at 1-0 through the half. “I thought we dominated the final 20 minutes of the first half,” said BF coach John Broadley, now in his 18th year at the helm of the Terriers. While BF had an edge for awhile in the first half, they couldn’t put the ball in the cage and BF’s Madi Pencek had one of those opportunities that probably kept her awake. With one minute to go, she scooped up the ball just over midfield and had no one in front of her. Broadley was yelling “take it in,” but Pencek let the shot go from 20 yards out and it sailed wide left. “Goals change games,” said Broadley whose team has only scored twice in going 0-6 this season. As soon as the game changed to the second half, the 3-1 Cosmos took control and put the game away with three tallies. So what swung the momentum to the Cosmos? “We started moving the ball to our feet and passing the ball to the girls in the green shirts,” said Hoisington. The goal that put the Cosmos up 2-0 came with 31:47 left in the second half, and was scored by Veysey, who picked up a short pass from Kayla Gibbons. Her shot through a maze of legs eluded BF keeper MaKenna Milbauer. BF followed with two challenging shots on Cosmo keeper Mykala Jasinski. The first came from senior Leanna Mager, who dribbled down the right side, cut in and fired a hard shot that Jasinski blocked with both hands and quickly scooped up the rebound. Moments later, Pencek had a shot go off Jasinski’s fingers, hit the crossbar and bounce away. Springfield then put the game away as junior Mycah White made it 3-0 with a fancy goal — she cut across the middle and and shot back across her body into the net. Veysey, who had the first goal 46 seconds into the game, had the Cosmos’ last goal with 10 minutes left as she moved up the middle and chipped it over Milbauer’s head. Springfield had a 14-7 edge in shots on goal. Both teams play on the road Friday — Springfield at Woodstock and Bellows Falls at Leland and Gray. Notes: The game was officiated by the Ludlow duo of Stew Schmidt and John Witalec, who have been officiating for a combined 109 years. There was only one corner kick all game. Springfield also beat BF by the same 4-0 score on Sept. 1.
