Springfield boys take down BF for first win Kameron Towle Sports SW SOC Springfield sophomore Jared Pugh dribbling into BF territory. Pugh posted his first career hat-trick in Friday's road win, 6-0. Kameron Towle WESTMINSTER- Springfield boys soccer traveled to Bellows Falls Union on Friday evening to take on the Terriers in a clash of 0-1 teams. Because of a tough loss to Green Mountain two days prior, Springfield was motivated more than usual, and the Cosmos used this to fuel them to a 6-0 road-victory. “The GM game (3-1 loss) woke us up a little bit and it made us know that this is real for us and that we’re into the regular season and need to be our best,” said Cosmos head coach Devan McCarty. Springfield was in control from the get-go, going up 5-0 in just over 25 minutes of game action. Goal scorers for the Cosmos Friday were Lucas Pugh, Brady Roy, Austin McFadden (all with one goal), and Jared Pugh (picked up his first career hat-trick). On Jared Pugh’s hat-trick, coach McCarty said, “That was huge for him. Last year he was a huge part of it… he only had one goal all of last season, but he’s one of those guys who makes a lot of plays happen. He did so today. That’s the first hat-trick since I’ve been coaching (two years).” McCarty was extremely proud of his team’s play on the road, saying, “We slowed the game down a bit, worked on our tempo and worked on a few things that we needed to. I’m really proud of these guys… the way we played today really showed that we had control and it showed some growth. We lost nine seniors and to have seven or eight kids that have never played before and come out here and do this, I’m very happy with the outcome.” When asked how his team looked in comparison to Wednesday’s loss to GM, McCarty said, “It was a big improvement from Wednesday night when we played Green Mountain. That was a tough loss at home. I asked [the team] a question. I said ‘what now?’ and they responded in a great way.” McCarty also had high praise for a certain BF player’s performance Friday. “BF had some great guys too, [John Donovan] was all over the field on us,” said McCarty. “He’s a sharp player as well. He’s gotta get a lot of credit because he kept them in the game for a while.” BF head coach, Charlene Rodriguez, also loved what she saw from Donovan Friday, saying, “One of my captains… John Donovan had a great game… he was everywhere. John is one of the most talented kids I have and he can play anywhere out on the field.” BF played a much stronger second half and were only outscored 1-0 in that frame. The Terriers seemed not only more aggressive and fired up to start the second half, but played with more discipline and better spacing. They caused Springfield to go offsides numerous times. Rodriguez credited her team’s better play in the second half to the Terriers resorting back to a formation they were more comfortable with, saying, “I think we started the second half a lot stronger than the first. I started a new formation to start off the game and the boys were pretty new to it. I went back to our original formation in the second half and we were a lot stronger… we were going to the ball.” Despite turning it around in the second half, BF was in too deep of a hole, as they fall to 0-2 in Division 3. Springfield picked up their first win of the year, improving to 1-1 in Division 2. Both teams are back in action on Tuesday. Bellows Falls travels to Windsor (4:30 pm) while Springfield hosts Twin Valley (6 pm).
