Springfield girls take down Bellows Falls, 4-0 Christopher Shaban 21 hrs ago 0 Springfield's Megan Greenwood #12 and the Terriers' Madi Pencek #26 keep an eye on the ball during a battle at midfield Saturday. Christopher Shaban WESTMINSTER- Springfield girls soccer made the short trip down to Bellows Falls for the season opener for both clubs and returned happy after a 4-0 win on Saturday morning. The Cosmos returned a full squad from last year’s team and picked up a few new players, and that depth and experience showed as they overpowered a young BF squad. Jenna Veysey got things rolling for Springfield with a clean goal from an assist by Hannah Crosby at the 3 minute mark. The tempo stayed in favor of Springfield as goalkeeper Makenna Milbauer of the Terriers was under constant pressure, but made some great saves to keep the score 1-0. With the Cosmos Kayla Gibbons and Veysey on the prowl for more goals, BF did a good job of clearing the zone and forcing Springfield to regroup from their own end of the field as Johanna Parker played well the entire game from her defensive position. Springfield was playing downhill for most of the half, but the best BF scoring chance came off the foot of Madi Pencek as her blast just missed and whistled over the crossbar. Springfield head coach Kevin Hoisington shifted Crosby from her defensive position into a striker role late in the half and that move paid immediate dividends as Crosby ripped a shot into the far corner to give Springfield a 2-0 lead at the break. Springfield opened the second half with a prolonged attack on net as Gibbons, Veysey, Julianna Alberto-Levings and Maizy White all had strong hits on net, but Milbauer stood strong in goal for BF. “We have some players with an array of skills and great footwork,” said Springfield head coach Hoisington after the game. Those skills paid off for Springfield as Veysey netted her second tally on great assists from Crosby and Gibbons to make it 3-0 at the 32’ mark. John Broadley’s young BF team began pushing more players forward as Lila Guerrina and Madi Pencek made runs on net, but once the ball wiggled through Springfield’s defenders, Mykahla Jasinski was there to kill any BF threats in goal. “I thought our defense was outstanding today and our communication was really good,” said Jasinski after the game. Emily Benson finished the scoring for Springfield with an unassisted goal for the 4-0 Cosmos win. “Springfield came into Westminster loaded with talent,” said Broadley. “A full returning squad plus three state finalist players from Green Mountain made sure that they would not leave empty handed. They were too much for this young Bellows Falls team.” BF did manage to hold up on defense fairly well despite the 4-0 score. “Amyra Terena and Sydney Bazin had outstanding games on defense,” said Broadley. Springfield (1-0) will head to West Rutland on Thursday while BF (0-1) will entertain Twin Valley on Wednesday.
