It’s the largest one ever! With over 100 booths this year, this event promises to host some of the most talented crafters and artisans from all over New England, New Jersey, and New York. The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. at the Riverside Middle School on Route 11 West in Springfield.
Sponsored by the Springfield High School Alumni Association, this fair has been one of the largest events held in Springfield for 40 years.
Individuals from all over the region will showcase their handmade wares at the event. Delicious food is prepared and served all day by the Alumni Chefs, food sales with whole pies and loaves of bread, book signers, wreaths, centerpieces, kettle corn, and raffle drawings with items donated by every crafter, will be held throughout the day.
At this year’s fair, there will be a Student Market on the fourth floor of Riverside Middle School in room 219. Approximately a dozen student companies will be set up with products and their business plans. Look for Upcycled Fashions by both Echo’s Fashion and Passion Fashion. Fashion by Tiffany will have handmade jewelry. There will be A&A Soaps, Shift ‘n Gift gift card holders, snacks by Fruit Fools and K&K Stacks, mixed media prints by Art Parrot, t-shirts with sayings designed by T’s Squid Ink, and limited number of beautiful cutting boards made from original Riverside 1956 bleachers S.S. Woodworking.
Additionally, there will be services displayed from dog walking to hobby horse gymkhana. The babysitters in the classes decided to offer something new to the Unicorn festival this year with limited, short-term child care for those shoppers with young children.
Since this is a pilot program, it will be important to put safety first, of course, so if the service fills temporarily, use your cell phone like a restaurant pager. The idea is to give parents at least a few minutes to shop without navigating strollers through crowds or such. There will be activities like hobby horse gymkhana, plastic pin bowling, coloring, pretend corner, and more. This is also an opportunity to check out your potential next babysitter.
The fair is always held the first Saturday of December. There is absolutely something for everyone. Come and spend the day; it’s a community celebration. For information about the craft fair or to volunteer to join in the fun, contact Marie Gelineau at 802-885-3579 or mgelineau@vermontel.net.
