You have to be kidding me. I worked there for 20 years and every year it was in the budget to repair / tar a good portion of the roof. It did not leak as I recall do to the on going yearly maintenance. The roof is flat. It is uninsulated. The heating bill for the year was in the neighbor hood of $60,000. That was years ago.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the plan for that old building. The new part maybe salvaged, but the rest should be torn down.
This is one project I would "CRAP" on (Citizens Rebel Against Progress).

More of your and my hard earned tax money thrown down a rat hole. How many tens of thousands of dollars has SRDC pocketed on vacant, unimproved mill buildings? NEVER is a follow up published on how the funds were spent and what if any benefit was relised. Mark my words, this money is a political favor to the self appointed "members" of SRDC. Keep in mind, SRDC is primarily a for profit, real estate holding company.
ReplyDeleteIf their interest was truely in Springfield ecconomic developement and securing high paying jobs within the comunity, they would negotiate with the town to gift both the Bryant and J&L properties, with a 20 year tax reprive to whatever viable enterprise would best meet those qualifications. Meanwhile, they will continue to rot and be a cash cow in grants for SRDC members. Too bad, Bob is better then that.
It's all "FLUFF". What is the end result...ROI (Return on Investment)? Photo's in the press are nice and mean well...It is a shame to see these buildings just rotting away! At least they put the Textron building in use as the new Police Department.
Deletemight as well just burn that check, what a waste of $25,000!
ReplyDeleteThis has to be a joke. It will be a waste of 25 K if the money actually goes to working on the roof. Who came up with this wacky idea anyway ?
ReplyDeleteOK so after the roof is fixed then what, fix it again the following year ?
Smell a rat....
I believe that the state's historical society have held everything up for SRDC's work with that building.... They have to clean up the site but they can't change the roof bcs it has historical value even though it is falling in... Every time they complete a mandated "improvement" the state sets up another.... SRDC is a valuable asset for this community, stop whining and get involved.....
ReplyDeleteI believe you're confusing the Bryant Grinder building with the J&L building. J&L has a 'sawtooth' roof which may or may not be protected by the Historical commission, I don't really know. What I DO KNOW is that trying to preserve a roof of this sort is like shoveling sand against the tide. But again.....this article is NOT about J&L.
DeleteVT Buildings & General Services Commissioner? Another useless but no doubt highly compensated position for a lifelong bureaucratic leech - like the one occupying the position now. Another nonessential position that should be eliminated and the state budget lowered accordingly.
ReplyDeleteYup, we're running a budget deficit in Vermont but we can somehow still afford to pass out "grants."
ReplyDeleteYup and I will GRANT you this. They will be taring that roof again and again. That Bryant building is worthless. The "old" Fellows building I must admit, the remodeling came out fantastic. It is now a great building for offices and whatever else is planned for it. BUT that Bryant building is worthless. Well may it is worth $25,000 after the roof is fixed. Springfield is just weird.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I could reason the upkeep, if there is a viable plan to attract a business to Springfield. As matter of a fact, what are the plans for the building? Great location, ample parking and close to I-91. It was great to see the town utilize the Textron building for the police department. Also it is awesome to see the Fellows building being utilized. It is a crying shame to see the Bryant's and J&L buildings just rotting and falling into disrepair. Come on Bob, use the funds for a marketing program to attract a business that offers livable wage jobs here in Springfield...That's what this town needs...Livable wage jobs.
DeleteHave you ever noticed that politicians have heads that look to big for their bodies.??
ReplyDelete$25,000? Is that the best you got SRDC (Bob Flint)? Really? You are so starved for shameless publicity that you have to hype a $25,000 grant? Pathetic...
