SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Community Chorus, directed by Kenneth Olsson, who is in his third year with the chorus, is a group of about 50 singers. The chorus is in its 47th year of bringing choral music to the Springfield area. The chorus will be singing a spring concert featuring songs of inspiration, hope and freedom at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Grafton White Church in Grafton, Vt., and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at the First Congregational Church, UCC, 77 Main St., in Springfield. The moving strains of “Hear my Prayer,” by Moses Hogan, opens the concert of spiritual songs and sets the tone for a presentation of songs born in the heart of a slave set free. Lyrics filled with hope and inspiration will lift the spirit and restore one’s faith in humanity and divinity. The concert will provide traditional spirituals, such as John Rutter’s “Down by the Riverside,” “Ride the Chariot,” by William Henry Smith, as well as some inspirational songs such as Linda Marcus’ “There’s a River in Judea,” and “The Lord is my Shepherd,” by Howard Goodall that viewers of the BBC series “The Vicar of Dibley” will recognize. They don’t charge an admission fee, but they do ask for donations as people leave. They have many expenses in the course of producing concerts, and donations are their primary way of meeting these expenses. Both concerts are handicapped accessible. In Springfield, the lift is accessed from the front lobby of the church. For more information, email Harriet at springfieldcommunitychorus@gmail.com.
