On Jan. 19, the animal hospital encountered a chimney fire in the crematorium in the building. The fire rose and traveled throughout the attic, leaving staff with no other option but to shut down the office. “Most of the interior damage was just from all of the smoke and soot, and some water,” said Samantha Hawkins, office manager. They saved what they could, and replaced a lot of equipment that was damaged. Animals that were boarding or undergoing treatments were sent back home, and the staff moved what was salvageable down the road to a temporary location. They were only closed a week and a half, and continued to offer most services, excluding boarding and grooming. The community was so supportive and helpful, and clients were understanding. “We had so many people call to see what they could do to help,” explained Hawkins, “and that really hits right here,” she continued, patting her hand on her heart. People brought staff members lunches and coffee as a thoughtful gesture. After seven months of cleaning, rebuilding and remodeling, Springfield Animal Hospital has moved back into their forever location. Parry Construction did most of the carpentry and general contracting, while HB Energy did the HVAC, electrical and plumbing work. Other painters, roofers, and contractors contributed to get the building ready for operation. All of the staff was on board to move the inventory and supplies into the “new” building.
