Cast of the Player's upcoming production – Seated left to right: Irene Ramen as Clairee, Aiyana Fortin as Shelby, and Anna Kendall as Annelle. Standing left to right: Aprille Lawrence as Ouiser, Ann Fahlbush as Truvy, and Kathryn King as M’lynn.
Gossipy southern women in a small town beauty parlor in Louisiana, delicate as magnolias outside but tough as steel inside, inhabit the comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling. Their story swings from heart-warming humor and sass to meaningful conversations about life. On a morning in June a wise-cracking Truvy (Ann Fahlbush of Proctorsville) opens her beauty salon, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. She is assisted by her eager new assistant, Annelle (Anna Kendall of Chester), who is unsure whether she is still married.
Truvy dispenses shampoo and advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (Aprille Lawrence of Springfield), and to Clairee, the feisty mayor’s widow (Irene Ramen of Rockingham).
Aiyana Fortin of Mount Holly plays the sensitive newlywed Shelby, and Kathryn King of Weathersfield is her protective mom, who shows her steel when the chips are down.
“Steel Magnolias,” directed by Stephanie Rowe, will run July 20 – 21 and 27 – 28 at the Springfield Community Players’ studio on South Street at 7:30 p.m.
