19th Annual RiverSweep spans two days, four towns


Since 2000, volunteers with the Black River Action Team have gathered at the end of each summer to paddle, wade, pull, reach, walk, and grapple with trash of all kinds in an effort to clean up the Black River. On Saturday, September 8th, Springfield Sweepers spread across town and reeled in a handful of shopping carts, 35 bags of trash and more.

Need for local warming shelters appears on the ris

It’s been about five years since the Springfield Warming Shelter opened, providing the homeless a place to sleep between November and April each year. The need for the shelter has increased every year, said North Springfield Baptist Church Rev. George Keeler, explaining they had to turn people away from the shelter for the first time this year.

Volunteers needed for AARP Foundation tax-aide program

Vermont District 10–AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking to expand its team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season in Springfield, Chester, and Bellows Falls. Soon approaching its 50th year, Tax-Aide offers free tax filing help to anyone, especially those 50 and older, who can’t afford a tax preparation service.

All-4-One AmeriCorps VISTA members are changing gears. The program welcomes Kelly Burton, a native of Springfield, Vermont, as this year's AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. Burton takes the place of AmeriCorps VISTA Michael Wanigasekera, who will return to his native Dallas, Texas in a couple of weeks.

Group repairs homes for those in need in Springfield

At SHS, desks have been swapped out for inflatable air mattresses, cots, and even an inflatable couch as WorkCampNE, a faith-based summer program, sets up camp throughout the classrooms, cafeteria, and auditorium. It’s all part of an effort to bring free home repairs to communities with financial need.
