There are a variety opportunities waiting for volunteers all over Vermont, including programs such as Meals on Wheels in Springfield. GMRSVP matches older adults to the service that best fits their personal interest and makes use of their skills and experience. “My volunteer work keeps me busy, useful and happy,” said Carol Sheldon of Sharon, according to a press release from Green Mountain RSVP. More than 40 nonprofit organizations in Windsor County benefit from the efforts of GMRSVP Volunteers. These seniors, age 55 plus, help the community at hospitals, schools, Meals on Wheels programs, community meal sites, food shelves, Vermont Adult Learning, Bone Builder Classes, warming shelters, and, they provide companionship and transportation to homebound elders, saving our municipalities millions of dollars. The benefits for volunteers are multifold. They include on-duty accident and liability insurance provided for GMRSVP volunteers, free of charge. Some transportation volunteers receive reimbursement for mileage. All GMRSVP volunteers and their work stations receive recognition for their service. Our volunteers report improved mental, emotional and physical health. Those who have an hour to give and would like more information can call the GMRSVP Office at 802-674-4547 or go to rsvpvt.org for more information. GMRSVP is a program of the Senior Corp., and is proudly sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging.
