Cosmos rally to down Rebels
BOYS BASKETBALL
Springfield 44, Leland & Gray 35
SPRINGFIELD — Kirk Perham and sophomore Devin Brady came up big in the second half, along with a team defensive stand, as the Cosmos closed the regular season with a victory.
That means they will play at U-32 in the first round of the Division II tournament, while a loss would have put them up against MSJ.
The Cosmos generally play at U-32 during the regular season and Springfield coach Pete Peck says they are comfortable in East Montpelier.
“It’s a reasonable matchup for us,” he said. “The kids are excited.”
Though only 7-13, the Cosmos were in position to beat some of the top teams in the division this year, including Mill River. They had a chance to beat D-I Mount Anthony, and had a win over D-II Burr and Burton, which finished the regular season 13-7.
The 15-5 Rebels led 21-20 at halftime but the Cosmos outscored them 13-6 in the third period and 11-8 in the fourth despite being smaller at just about every position.
Perham had seven of his team-high 14 points in the second half and Brady had his five in the foruth period.
“He’s given us some big hoops during the year,” Peck said.
Aaron Wallace led the Cosmos with 16 points while Bobby Colver had 12 and Michael Bergeron nine for the Rebels.
