Springfield’s proud community tradition, the 56th annual Apple Blossom Cotillion, will be held this weekend, with the crowning of the 56th Apple Blossom Queen on Saturday night.
This year’s cotillion’s theme is love, with “Struck By Love” told through a variety of songs performed by the 17 high school senior girls and their escorts who make up the cotillion.
The high school seniors will be joined by 20 elementary school couples as they perform for Friday and Saturday night at Riverside Middle School’s Dressel Gymnasium. Judges conduct interviews and judge the performance, naming a queen and her court.
The cotillion, a major fundraiser for the Springfield Hospital Foundation’s scholarship fund, attracts thousands of area residents for the performance.
“The Cotillion is both a community pageant and a fund raising event,” says Larry Kraft, director of the foundation, which sponsors the event. The cotillion proceeds will be used for the Dr. E. Sherburne Lovell Health Career Award and to fund nutrition education and physical activities for area youth. Lovell was a longtime doctor in Springfield.
Pam Church and Carrie Jewell return for their ninth and final year as directors of the cotillion. Kraft will be the event’s master of ceremonies for the 12th consecutive year.
In addition to the Saturday performance with the crowning of the Apple Blossom Queen, there is an opening night performance on Friday. Both performances are at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. at the Dressel Gym.
Tickets for Friday’s performance cost $10. Tickets for the Saturday performance cost $15. All tickets may be purchased in advance at Tina’s Hallmark in the Springfield Plaza and at cotillion rehearsals or at the door on the night of the performance.
