Springfield — Springfield sixth-grader Devin Richey won first-place to be named Vermont State Champion Wrestler.
Richey had a challenging year, facing down some seriously tough competition in Vermont and neighboring states; his focus and determination paid off, however, as he grappled his way to a gold medal recently in Essex.
"He's a sponge," said Coach Floyd Buck, about Richey's quick grasp of the different maneuvers taught by Buck and Coach Donnie Beebe.
Richey is one of four Springfield wrestlers who qualified to compete in the National Tournament in Ohio this year: Brandon Bennett, Mo Stettner, and Matt LaChappelle each also qualified at earlier tournaments, placing first, seconnd, or third in some of the toughest tournaments around.
To learn more about the youth wrestling team, or to register for the summer clinic for K-8 taught by Coaches Beebe & Buck, call Springfield Parks and Recreation Department at 885-2727.
Thats great! Is there a high school team? I know a bunch of kids that wrestled when they were kids that would do GREAT.
