Published January 24, 2015 in the Rutland Herald Pats have right composite to beat Cosmos By POODY WALSH Correspondent SPRTINGFIELD — Rebounding and depth were the keys as Mount Anthony rolled to a 64-40 win over Springfield in a Marble Valley League game Friday at Dressel Gym. It was also a game in which an illegal ball was used in the first half. According to Mount Anthony coach Brian Harrington the Vermont Principals Association only allows one certain ball to be used for game balls. “The ball we used in the first half was an inside-outside ball,” said Harrington. “In the second half we used the legal ball which is for use only for inside play,“ he said Harrington. “It’s made of a different composite.” “It just has a different feel to it,” said Springfield official scorer Josh Dikeman. “I don’t know how that ball got in there,” said Springfield coach Joe Brown who is also the school’s athletic director. Harrington was jovial about the whole thing blaming the ball, “for all the turnovers his team had in the first half.” However, the real story was the rebounding and the depth as Harrington used nine players changing lines like it was a hockey game. “I think by using all nine players almost an equal time it tired out Springfield,” said Harrington. MAU outscored Springfield 41-22 in the second half. Springfield entered the game playing pretty well, having won four straight including coming from 16 points down in the third quarter against Otter Valley. But according to Brown, there was no a lot of spark in the team. “We played with no energy,” said Brown. “I hope we can use this game as a learning experience. It’s a game that could break us for the rest of the season or wake us up.” Springfield, which has been notorious this season for slow starts, started out slowly again Friday night falling behind 9-0 and not getting its first field goal until there were 28 seconds left in the period. Both teams picked it up in the second quarter, Springfield scored 15 points to 14 for MAU which led to a 23-18 MAU lead at the break. Then once the Patriots got their hands on the legal ball they bumped the lead to 44-28 after three quarters and coasted through the final period to go 10-4 on the season. Springfield is now 8-6. Madison Little led the MAU scorers with 15 while Chelsea McAllister had 17 for Springfield. Springfield had a tough time at the foul line, hitting just 7 of27. Springfield goes to Windsor Monday while Rutland comes to MAU on Wednesday.
