Green Mountain Holiday Tournament underway By CHRIS DOHERTY cdoherty@eagletimes.com Green Mountain’s Kassidy Cummings puts up a shot during Tuesday’s first-round game. — TIM TAYLOR Green Mountain’s Kassidy Cummings puts up a shot during Tuesday’s first-round game. — TIM TAYLOR CHESTER — The annual Green Mountain Holiday Tournament began Tuesday at Green Mountain Union High School. The two-day tournament features the boys and girls teams from Green Mountain, Springfield, Mt. St. Joseph and Twin Valley. Tuesday’s match-ups were Springfield vs. MSJ and Green Mountain vs. Twin Valley. The Green Mountain girls were the only local team that was able to pick up a win, earning themselves a spot in the championship game against MSJ. Below are capsules for each of the four games. GAME 1 (girls): MSJ 62, Springfield 34 The day began with the girls matchup of Springfield and MSJ. The Cosmos scored three quick points to begin the game and ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 11 to begin the second quarter, but from then on it was all MSJ, earning a convincing victory. The Mounties outscored the Cosmos 18-4 in the second and that was it for Springfield. It looked as though early on in the second half that Springfield would be able to cut into the deficit, but MSJ was just too efficient on offense. Midway through the third quarter, Cassidy Otis got called for a technical foul after being fouled (hit in the face). Springfield head coach Joe Costello vehemently disagreed. For a few minutes after that it seemed like the Cosmos were rattled. Costello called a timeout, which seemed to fix things, but it still didn’t help in stopping the Mounties. Monica Schmelzenback scored a game high 26, while Jenna Eaton scored 21 for MSJ. Offensively, the Cosmos were able to get things going in the second half, scoring at a much more efficient rate, scoring 13 points in the third quarter, their high for the game. Otis led the way for the Cosmos, scoring 12 points. Hannah Crosby scored six and Ari Rowe scored five. Springfield will play in the consolation game today at 3 p.m. against Twin Valley. While MSJ will play in the girl’s championship game around 6 p.m. against Green Mountain. GAME 2 (boys): MSJ 71, Springfield 32 Similar to the matchup between the MSJ and Springfield girls, it was all MSJ. The Mounties struggled shooting in the first quarter to allow Springfield to keep it close, but the Cosmos had a problem with turnovers as well. But in the second quarter MSJ exploded offensively, outscoring the Cosmos 19-5. Then in the third it was more of the same for the Mounties, scoring 21 points. Springfield found a rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 15, but they just couldn’t keep up with the efficiency of MSJ. Springfield was led in scoring by GJ Scherington with eight points. Alex Naccarato and Sumner Jansen each scored seven and Michael Messer had six. Barryn Shark led the way for the Mounties, scoring a game-high 21. Clay Drinwater pitched in 17. Springfield will play in the boy’s consolation game following the conclusion of the girl’s consolation game against GM. MSJ will play in the final game of the tournament at around 7:30 p.m.
