2016-01-20 / Local Springfield Steampunk Festival 2016 will benefit the Springfield Humane Society SPRINGFIELD — The second annual Springfield Steampunk Festival presented by the Steampunk Society of Vermont and the Hartness House Inn have announced that the Springfield Humane Society would be the festival’s beneficiary for 2016. The festival is slated for Friday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 25. Festival coordinator and founder of the Steampunk Society of Vermont Sabrina Smith, said, “We chose the Springfield Humane Society because of the amazing work they do with animals under the direction of their dedicated Executive Director, Anne Swan, Also, all of us on the Steampunk Society of Vermont’s board love animals and several of us own rescue animals.” Anne Swan said he’s thrilled and describes the services offered at the Springfield Humane Society (www.spfldhumane.org.)“We're a small humane society covering 11 towns, and we often receive calls from towns outside our area, and we always help when we can. Besides taking in unwanted cats and dogs, caring for them medically, and finding them loving homes, we also hold low cost spay/neuter clinics monthly for members of the public, have groups of school children in weekly to read to the animals and learn about proper pet care. We also conduct educational talks out in the communities we serve, and respond to cruelty calls as well. We have an active volunteer program, and community service opportunities too.” Organizers are already planning this year’s festival and are seeking volunteers. For folks who want to become more involved as part of the festival crew, the website lists areas of need and expertise. Also there are many other tasks such as manning the ticket booth, help with parking, driving a shuttle bus, runners, activity helpers for the fashion show, children’s activities, performers, workshops vendors, etc. Volunteers will receive a full free weekend pass for working at least four hours. Volunteers are welcome to work for more than four hours but only one weekend pass will be allotted. For those interested, go to the festival’s website to fill out an application. http://springfieldvtsteampunkfest.com/volunteerapp.html
