Published April 17, 2016 in the Rutland Herald Cosmos finish 4-0 road trip By POODY WALSH WESTMINSTER – Springfield softball coach Andy Bladyka gave his team Sunday and Monday off from practice – and why not as his team not only won all three games it played last week, but the Cosmos did not even give up a run. The latest victory was a 10-0 win Saturday at Bellows Falls as the Cosmos completed a four-game road trip to start the season at 4-0 while out-scoring the opposition 37-1. Once again senior hurler Jade Twombly took center stage as she fanned 17, walked one and gave up two hits. In 26 innings this season she has an earned run average of 0.00 with 48 strikeouts and five bases on balls. The two hits she gave up Saturday were the most she has given up in a game this season. Her previous three outings were all one-hitters. “I felt a little better today than at Green Mountain the other day,” Twombly said. “I was working the corners better today. Gosh, I love my team.” She also apparently was not counting the strikeouts during the game. When asked how many strikeouts she thought she had she said, “around 10.” Of the 97 pitches she threw, 68 were for strikes. She struck out the side thee times and fanned seven in a row during one stretch. Springfield, which hasn’t always hit the ball well this season, had 13 hits with the one through four batters, going 10 for 15 paced by leadoff batter Brooke Willey, who was 4 for 4. “She (BF pitcher Murphy Hicks) threw just the right speed for me,” said Willey. “Also we haven’t played BF in a while and we wanted to show them what we can do.” Calista Polidor, Lena Geyer and Cassidy Otis followed Willey with two-hit games. It was the third two-hit game of the season for Polidor. “I was good to see the bats get going,” said Bladyka. Bellows Falls’ best chance to do some damage came in the first inning when Emily Stoddard reached on an error and Abbe Cravinho legged out a bunt single to start the game. However, Twombly struck out the next three batters. In the third Stoddard reached on an error and with one out and moved to third on a couple of passed balls. Again Twombly held the fort with a strikeout and a groundout. “We did the best we could,” said BF coach Pete Fry. “We stood in there and took our hacks.” Springfield scored all the runs it would need in the first inning when Willey bunted for a base hit which was followed by an error and two-run double by Otis, who had three RBI on the day. Otis later scored in the inning on a passed ball. Springfield added two more runs in the second, four in the third and one in the sixth. Hicks was the complete game pitcher for BF. She fanned nine and walked just one. Springfield will have its first home game on Thursday when Otter Valley comes to Bill Robinson Field. Bellows Falls will host Rutland in another Thursday game. http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20160417/SPORTS02/160419558
