SOFTBALL Springfield 5, Rutland 0 April 13,2016 Email Article Print Article Cosmos pitcher Jade Twombley allowed the Raiders just one hit during Rutland’s season opener. “We weren’t real comfortable at the plate until later on,” Rutland coach Dick Wright said. “She threw well.” Molly Pfenning scorched the lone hit for the Raiders, who played sound defense for a majority of the contest. Rutland hurler Lauren Snitker pitched well in her debut in the circle, allowing six hits and four walks. She struck out five. Twombley was good for nine strikeouts and conceded just a pair of walks. Calista Polidor connected for a pair of singles and scored one run for Springfield. Twombly struck out nine and walked two. She gave up the lone Rutland hit in the fourth, but that batter was doubled off first on a line drive to first to erase the threat. Calista Polidor and Lina Geyer provided half of Springfield's eight hits, collecting two apiece, and they helped break a 0-0 game in the fourth inning. Geyer added three runs and a walk. Twombly aided her own cause with a pair of RBIs on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 2-0 and with an RBI single in the seventh. Bladyka also commended the defensive play of his freshmen on the corners, first baseman Hannah Crosby and third baseman Mykhala Jasinski. Jasinski came up with two big big plays at the hot corner and neither committed an error. “They both played real solid defense,” he said. Springfield (2-0) visits Green Mountain Thursday and Bellows Falls Saturday.
