However, they had yet to prove they could do it again this season as their first two games were lopsided victories. On Friday, the Terriers erased any doubt they could continue the trend as they fought their way past a stubborn Springfield squad by a 1-0 margin. “Their goalie and their defense did a great job,” said BF coach Bethany Coursen. “We dominated a lot of the game and they did a great job of keeping it out. Their goalie had some amazing saves. “We just couldn't get it in the net, kind of like deja vu from last year. They scored one and got the win, so that's awesome. The passing and stuff seems to be getting better, and the confidence that they have in some of their teammates.” Springfield co-head coach Lyndsie Perkins was equally impressed with her team's defense. “They were together today as a unit, which was really great,” she said. “They brought the ball out of the circle, which was wonderful Our goalie, Aunna Parker had an amazing game, some great saves. “I really couldn't be prouder of them. Bellows Falls is an extremely difficult team and I thought it was a really well-matched game. I wish that we could have been more offensive a little bit more, bringing the ball up the field, but that's definitely something that we can work on in the future. The Cosmos' defense formed a formidable wall for BF to try and penetrate, and it took the Terriers nearly 37 minutes to break through. With 23:09 remaining to play, Molly Kelly fired a low shot into the left corner from just under 10 yards away. The fact BF was only able to come away with one goal was a testament to the stinginess of Springfield goalkeeper Parker and her stalwart defensive mates. BF peppered the Cosmos' end with 34 shots on the day — 32 were rejected 32. The only other shot to get behind Parker came off the stick of Abbe Cravinho with 14:28 to go. It appeared to go in following a brutal multi-player scrum in front of the cage, however, the goal was waved off moments later after it was ruled the ball had hit a BF player's foot first. “We bunched a bit in front of the cage, so we just need to make sure that we work on staying in our positions in front of the cage and not do the kind of bobblehead thing where we just go where the ball is,” Coursen said. This was a game in which Bellows Falls dominated play, keeping the ball out of its own end for large periods at a time. In fact, Springfield managed just one penalty corner to 17 for the Terriers. The Cosmos lone corner came less than five minutes into the first half. BF, on the other hand, had multiple consecutive corners in the first 17 minutes of action. The Terriers reeled off three straight corner in a one-minute span about 8 ½ minutes into the game, had another one about a minute later, then took four more in a row in a 1 ½-minute span about halfway through the opening period. Springfield's next best chance to score came with just under three minutes left in the first half when Angelina Bigwood was able to maneuver the ball just inside the penalty circle, but the Cosmos would turn it over on a foul — their were nearly 100 of those whistled in this contest. Bigwood got another chance just under three minutes into the second half, but BF keeper Brigid Hodsden was able to knock her shot down with her hand protector. Neither team let up during the 60 minutes of play and both sides proved something to themselves. Bellows Falls showed it can win the tight battles and Springfield showed its ready to tangle with the best. The Terriers (3-0) visit Burr & Burton on Wednesday while Springfield visits Hartford on Thursday.
