2017-02-24 / Sports Local wrestlers ready for Vermont championships VERGENNES, Vt. — Four local wrestlers will be looking to improve on last year's showings when the 2017 Vermont Wrestling Championships get underway today. Three of those grapplers earned hardware at the 2016 tournament. Lucas Saunders of Compass placed third at 106 pounds, and there were also two fifth-place winners in Matt LaChapelle of Springfield at 170 and BF's DJ Snide at 195. Also returning to this year's tourney is Springfield's Mo Stettner. LaChapelle, a junior, is seeded third at 170 and comes into the tournament with a 19-5 record. John Stawinski of Essex is the top seed at 44-3. Mt. Anthony's Austin Prendergast is the No. 2 seed at 45-7. Saunders and Snide, who have been competing as independents for the Rockingham Area Wrestling Club this season, are both seeded fourth. Snide, a senior, is 19-3. He is seeded behind Champlain Valley's Jacob Griggs (47-4), Mt. Anthony's Colin Crowley (32-7) and Alex Rizvanov of Essex (41-14). Saunders comes in at 13-3. The junior is seeded behind St. Johnsbury's Hunter Verge (47-2), Mt. Anthony's Dylan Ross (40-9) and Ben Stewart of Essex (24-7). Stettner (5-8), a senior, is unseeded at 132. Mt. Mansfield's Daniel Bliss is the top seed at 40-4. Bellows Falls was 10th in the 24-team tournament last year, but did not have a program this season. Compass and Springfield tied for 22nd. The Cosmos will enter a much larger contingent this year, albeit a relatively inexperienced one, with nine other wrestlers joining LaChapelle and Stettner. They are Trent Lewis-Briere (3-3) at 126, Gillian Guy (0-11) at 138, No. 8 seed Tim Bapp-Cederholm (8-8) at 145, Brandon Bennett (5-9) at 152, Mason Olney (3-9) at 182, Matt Prosser (6-9) at 195, Skylar Wallace (0-9) at 220 and Jayson Webster (6-8) at 285. Wrestling is expected to begin at approximately 4 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday.
